Multisensory Integration in Self Motion Perception
نویسندگان
چکیده
Self motion perception involves the integration of visual, vestibular, somatosensory and motor signals. This article reviews the findings from single unit electrophysiology, functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging and psychophysics to present an update on how the human and nonhuman primate brain integrates multisensory information to estimate one’s position and motion in space. The results indicate that there is a network of regions in the non-human primate and human brain that processes self motion cues from the different sense modalities.

Age Differences in Visual-Auditory Self-Motion Perception during a Simulated Driving Task
Recent evidence suggests that visual-auditory cue integration may change as a function of age such that integration is heightened among older adults. Our goal was to determine whether these changes in multisensory integration are also observed in the context of self-motion perception under realistic task constraints. Thus, we developed a simulated driving paradigm in which we provided older and...
متن کاملMultimodal Integration during Self-Motion in Virtual Reality
When moving through our environment, the human brain must integrate information from our muscles and joints (proprioception), the acceleration detectors in our inner ear (vestibular cues) and dynamic visual information (optic flow). While past research has focused on understanding how each of these modalities can be used to perceive different aspects of self-motion independently, very little is...
متن کاملMovement Sonification: Motion perception, behavioral effects and functional data
The sonification of human movement data is a new approach to support motor perception, motor control and learning in sports and rehabilitation. Perceptual and motor control mechanisms both benefit of additional acoustic information, both are performing more accurate compared to unimodal conditions. But how does movement sonification work when supporting perception and action especially when pro...
متن کاملHow Optic Flow and Inertial Cues Improve Motion Perception.
Estimating our egocentric heading direction is an important component of navigation. Recent studies have explored how inertial cues from the vestibular system and optic flow signals from the visual system interact to improve perceptual precision and accuracy. Heading precision is improved through multisensory integration, whereas heading accuracy is maintained through multisensory calibration m...
متن کاملUnconscious integration of multisensory bodily inputs in the peripersonal space shapes bodily self-consciousness.
Recent studies have highlighted the role of multisensory integration as a key mechanism of self-consciousness. In particular, integration of bodily signals within the peripersonal space (PPS) underlies the experience of the self in a body we own (self-identification) and that is experienced as occupying a specific location in space (self-location), two main components of bodily self-consciousne...
